20 Years of Transforming Patient Recovery

Our beginnings

Westmead Rehabilitation Hospital marks 20 years of providing specialist inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation care to the Western Sydney community this week. Since opening in 2004, the hospital has developed a strong reputation for neurological, orthopaedic, reconditioning and complex rehabilitation, supported by an interdisciplinary, patient-centred model of care.

Founder Professor Ian Baguley AM reflects that the hospital’s strength has always been its focus on patients, teamwork and continuous improvement, principles that continue to guide clinical practice today.

Rehabilitation Physician Dr Abdul Haidary notes significant advances in recent years, including improved nursing escalation, enhanced monitoring, fewer clinical errors, stronger fall-prevention strategies and high-quality outpatient physiotherapy services. These improvements have contributed to safer care, better outcomes and growing referral confidence across the local health network.

Looking ahead, Westmead continues to evolve with a focus on early intervention, integrated technology and expanded outpatient and community rehabilitation pathways, ensuring continuity of care from admission through to recovery.

Anne Renshaw, Chief Executive Officer of Westmead Rehabilitation Hospital, said the team is proud of the hospital’s 20-year history and remains committed to supporting patients, families and referring clinicians across Western Sydney.
