How to Stop Pressure Injuries Before They Start

World Pressure Injury Prevention Day 2025, also known as International Stop Pressure Ulcer Day, will be observed on Thursday, 20 November 2025. This annual event, held on the third Thursday of November, raises global awareness about pressure injuries and how to prevent them. Leading organisations such as the National Pressure Injury Advisory Panel (NPIAP) and the European Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel (EPUAP) are spearheading campaigns and events, including the NPIAP virtual conference on 13–14 November and a live webinar by Care of Sweden on 20 November.

Why Pressure Injury Prevention Matters

Pressure injuries—sometimes called bedsores or pressure ulcers—occur when prolonged pressure damages skin and underlying tissue. They can lead to pain, infection, and extended hospital stays. The good news? They are preventable with proactive care. Here are five essential tips to reduce the risk.

1. Inspect Skin Regularly

Daily checks for redness, swelling, or changes in texture—especially over bony areas like heels, hips, and tailbone—can help detect early warning signs before they become serious wounds.

2. Reposition Frequently

Changing position every two hours relieves pressure and improves circulation. For wheelchair users, regular weight shifts are equally important to protect skin integrity.

3. Use Support Surfaces

Specialised mattresses, cushions, and overlays help distribute weight evenly and reduce pressure points, making them vital for individuals at high risk.

4. Maintain Good Nutrition

Healthy skin depends on a balanced diet rich in protein, vitamins, and minerals, along with proper hydration to support tissue repair and resilience.

5. Manage Moisture

Excess moisture from sweat or incontinence can weaken skin and increase the risk of breakdown, so keep skin clean and dry and use barrier creams or absorbent products when needed.

By following these steps and spreading awareness, caregivers and healthcare professionals can make a significant impact in preventing pressure injuries.
