Robotic Assisted Therapy

At Westmead Rehabilitation Hospital our focus is on innovation. We seek opportunities to integrate the latest technology into our programs, so that our patients achieve outcomes far beyond the industry standard.

Meet our robotic-assisted rehab heroes

Myro

Myro MYRO®´s sensor-based surface enables task-oriented rehabilitation with real objects, trains the patient’s cognitive abilities, and improves motor abilities of the upper extremity. Therapeutic games are controlled intuitively by touch, force application or object displacement and rotation.

Amadeo

With AMADEO®, patients train various aspects of the grasping movement and finger extension. Patients who are barely able or unable to grasp can perform hundreds of robot-assisted grasping movements. Active participation of the patient’s affected hand is promoted by biofeedback and assist-as-needed interactions.

TyroServer is also available.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is robotic-assisted therapy / robotic rehabilitation?

Robotic-assisted therapy utilises computer-assisted therapy devices, software and applications to provide patients with intensive rehabilitation that engages them physically and cognitively.

Robotic rehabilitation successfully blends principles of rehabilitation with robotics, virtual reality and gamification, engaging patients with the three components of robotic assisted therapy – intensity, dose and motivation.

Who does robotic-assisted rehabilitation help?

Whether stroke, spinal cord injury, Parkinsons or Multiple Sclerosis; our sensory robotic rehabilitation devices can be applied with a variety of symptoms to improve and enhance recovery.

Robotic assisted therapy focuses on the following:

  • Finger and hand therapy
  • Cognition and visual scanning
  • Balance
  • Gait analysis
  • Upper limb and lower limb function

Robotic-assisted rehabilitation helps therapists and patients to do the right things at the right time, regardless of location, indication and phase of rehabilitation.

Combining robotic-assisted rehabilitation with traditional therapies.

At Westmead Rehabilitation Hospital, we are using robotic-assisted therapy to supplement our conventional, pre-existing, multi-disciplinary rehabilitation therapy. The use of both robotic and traditional therapies enables our patients to experience the best possible therapeutic results within the shortest time frame possible.

We have now included robotic assisted rehabilitation into existing in-patient and day therapy programs at Eden Private Hospital.

The benefits of robotic assisted therapy.

Patients using robotic-assisted therapy have seen improvement in patient functional deficit resulting from stroke, traumatic brain injury, MS, Parkinsons and, musculoskeletal and spinal conditions.

There are numerous benefits to utilising robotic-assisted therapy in your road to rehabilitation:

  • Allows you to build on the foundations of traditional rehabilitation
  • Increase in repetition of movement, compared to traditional, is important in neuroplasticity and recovery.
  • Provides more stimulus, more repetition and more rehab therapy time for patients
  • Devices are user-friendly and provide instant feedback to help keep you motivated and engaged

What are patients saying about robotic therapy?

Westmead Rehabilitation director of rehabilitation, said the results and feedback from patients who have trialled the robotics technology has been overwhelmingly positive.

"One of our young stroke survivors said she felt she completed her exercises much more comprehensively on the devices than she did in traditional therapy sessions and we had a patient with multiple sclerosis tell us she felt significant benefit from the couple of weeks of the trial," she said.

"Evidence shows repetition aids recovery and, across the board, patients find the robotics not only challenges but engages them to keep working towards their goals, with gaming and virtual reality incorporated to aid in motivation."

How to add robotic-assisted therapy to your rehabilitation

Ask your general practitioner or specialist to refer you to our program (use our online form below).

The new robotics will be available to inpatients, day patients and outpatients, with those who are uninsured able to access a package of sessions, tailored to their individual needs.

Robotic-assisted rehabilitation is also available to patients under the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) and other funding schemes.

Westmead Rehabilitation Hospital is licensed to provide level five rehabilitation, offering intensive programs to patients across all age groups.
